Implants in Posterior Areas

Description

The replacement of posterior teeth with implants allows to replace one or more missing teeth without affecting bordering teeth or using removable dentures. Posterior implants allow you to have normal chewing and to protect anterior teeth during mastication.

Implants in the back jaw can be placed in two clinical conditions: 1. after extractions (healed ridges) or 2. during the extraction of hopeless teeth. After extractions, the bone ridge will collapse as a normal process of healing. The use of removable prosthesis increases this problem. If sufficient bone is available, the dental implants are placed by raising the gum tissue and preparing the bone to anchor the implants.Three to four months later, the final crowns are placed, see cases 1 and 2. In the second clinical situation, hopeless teeth are present and need to be extracted. Immediate implant placement is perfomed in conjunction with bone grafting procedure. The implants will need more time to heal(approx 6 months).

Case 1. Implant placement after loosing posterior teeth due to periodontal disease. Two implants were placed in the area of the molars. Final restoration Dr. Steve Benson.

Case 2. Extraction in area of the maxillary sinus without any sinus lift procedure. The arrows show the floor of the sinus. Notice the change after implant surgery.

Length

Average 2 hours or more

Cases are followed closely for 3-6 months prior to final crown placement

___________________________________________________________________________

After surgery

Temporary soreness, minimal gum tissue brushing, no face swelling.

If combined with tooth extraction, face swelling is quite common.

Recovery

Back to work: 2-3 days when performed in conjunction with extractions.

Back to work: 1-2 days without extractions.

________________________________________________________________________________

Risk

Implant loss due to early loading ( biting on the implant too soon). Infection could appear if the extracted tooth is severely infected or antibiotics are not taken as recommended.

Results

Very predictable. Dental implants are a permanent solution. They do not need to be removed at a later time unless problems appear.
