Complete Tooth Replacement with implants in a Single Appointment

Description

The technique consists of extracting a hopeless tooth, placing an implant and a temporary crown in a single appointment, see newsletter Oct 2003.

Benefits for the patient: Single atraumatic surgery, no need to use removable appliances (Flipper), excellent post-surgical evolution (Minimal discomfort and no swelling), minimal risk of implant loss, complete preservation of the esthetic and reduced overall cost.

Case: A 28 year old female patient developed an unrestorable carious lesion on the left central. The tooth was extracted and immediately replaced with an implant. A temporary crown was placed the day of the surgery and maintained for 6 months. At that time, a final crown was fabricated. The final results show excellent tissue preservation including gum tissue and alveolar bone.

________________________________________________________________________________

Length

Average 2 hours or more

Cases are followed closely for 6 months prior to final crown placement

________________________________________________________________________________

After surgery

Temporary soreness, minimal gum tissue brushing, no face swelling.

Recovery

Back to work: next day

________________________________________________________________________________

Risk

Implant loss due to early loading ( biting on the implant too soon). Infection could appear if the extracted tooth was severely infected or antibiotics are not taken as recommended. Slight gum recession is commonly (0.5-1 mm) depending on local trauma.

Results

Very predictable. Dental implants are a permanent solution. They do not need to be removed at a later time unless problems appear.

Patient Status

Outpatient. Not need to go to a hospital
